It was a day that I will never forget because it was the first time a Yoga Festival had ever been held in Palestine and Yogabeats had been honoured with the invitation to participate ,…!!!
It had begun with an invitation to meet the Indian Ambassador to Ramala at the embassy, he was fascinated by the legacy that Yogabeats had created since its first initial invitation ( in Jericho) to teach back in 2004 and we spoke across endless cups of tea about our work!
All of the YBs team (Sarah and Paul Stephen) had travelled to Palestine straight from
the Milan Yoga Event, where a Thousand plus students turned up in central Milan to celebrate and support the peaceful work of Yogabeats in Palestine and Israel !
Riding the wave of the Italian gatherings in Milan, gave us the energy and perfect intention for this auspicious next event in Palestine and the for me it felt like we were all on automatic over drive !!!!
The event itself began on the roof of The Peace Centre in Bethlehem in Nativity Square,.. all the significant individuals and our hosts plus the Mayor of Bethlehem
made speeches to celebrate the event,.. while a small drone hovered overhead recording the entire event,… I was asked to conduct a meditation for all the diverse people present on the flat roof in the bright sunshine (as it was still Ramadan and most individuals were tired as they had been fasting all day) and it felt to me as if life itself was holding its breath as I gazed down upon all of the extraordinary survivors of the conflict laying silently with their eyes closed … Awesome moments that my spirit will never forget!!!
As Ramadan drew to its daily close, everyone rushed downstairs to where a mass meal had been laid out, to counter the effects of the fast, and it really was close to a stampede !!!
This was followed by a Yogabeats class in which the Indian Ambassador came and sat in attendance and before the Yogabeats session a film was shown of the Indian Prime Minister and his message of India’s gift of yoga to the world,…. the session began in the Yogabeats tradition where everyone greets one another, and as everyone had eaten a full meal, it was a very slow roll into more active asanas, the club sounds gradually increased in tempo until the room was totally Rocking, and of course it became a full on Yogabeats celebration!!!
After this picture was taken, several young people came up to me and deeply thanked me for the session, and told me how Yogabeats has this ability of releasing the intense tensions that they learn to live with everyday, because of the severe claustrophobic nature of the situation in Palestine!
So to all of our brothers and sisters mothers and fathers in Palestine we are constantly honoured to be able to contribute through Yogabeats in some small way to your welfare and happiness,..and we will never stop!!!
Big ups to you all David Sye X
